Accidentally Deleted Duo Mobile App: How to Restore Your Two-Factor Authentication

NJIT's two-factor authentication (2FA) strategy is designed to strengthen our defenses against cyber attacks, providing an extra layer of security for your login credentials. In this article, we will guide you through the process of restoring your Duo mobile app and setting up 2FA on your NJIT account.

Two-Factor Authentication: What Is It?

Biometrics like fingerprint or retina scan, as well as a smartphone with an app to approve authentication requests, are two common methods used in 2FA. This security measure requires extra information or a physical device to log in, in addition to your password. By using two different channels of authentication, we can protect user logins from remote attacks that may exploit stolen usernames and passwords.

Adding or Removing Devices

You can add or remove devices from your profile by selecting Manage Devices on the Duo system screen. If you get a Duo push notification or phone call when you're not logging in, it's likely someone is trying to use your account. To stop them, tap Deny in the Duo Mobile app or hang up on the phone call.

Session Timeouts

Session timeouts will be based on user roles - Faculty, Staff, and Students. Using the Remember me option will allow people to only do the verification step once per day for most NJIT services (per browser session).

Enrollment Process

To enroll in Duo 2FA, go to the enrollment tab and learn the process to sign up now. The most popular option is the Duo Mobile app on your smartphone. You'll get to choose which devices to use with Duo. When you log in to a protected NJIT service such as Banner, Webmail or Canvas, Duo will prompt you to confirm your identity using a secondary device.

Troubleshooting Enrollment Issues

If you're struggling with enrollment, feel free to make an appointment at the NJIT IST Service Desk. You'll receive an enrollment email asking you to set up the Duo app. Duo has a self-enrollment process that allows you to easily register your device.

Two-Factor Authentication helps prevent unauthorized use of UCIDs and passwords by ensuring that only account owners themselves can access their accounts. This 'Double Lock' system provides an additional layer of security, requiring both something you know (UCID and password) and something you have (a timed, unique code generated just for you). By following these steps, you can restore your Duo Mobile app and set up 2FA on your NJIT account.
